Sustainable design is changing the traditional roles and relationships of the architect, lighting designer, electrical engineer, and manufacturer.  There are three sustainable design issues for which lighting plays a significant role: minimizing energy consumption, minimizing light pollution and incorporating daylight harvesting to reduce reliance on artificial lighting.

Light Pollution/ Light Trespass Control

Light pollution, or sky glow results from light emitted upward or reflected from pavement or groundcover upward into the sky.  Sources include street lighting, wallpacks and exterior lights with poor optics that send light upward rather than directing it to the appropriate surfaces.
