Project Description
The lighting design firm tasked with the illumination of OCAD University's Creative Campus has accomplished an extensive upgrade, encapsulating two of the institution's prime spaces: The Great Hall and the Ignite Gallery.
In The Great Hall, the central conduit of student activity and exhibitions, the firm's objective was to establish an adaptable lighting environment that would complement the multifaceted nature of the space. The installation of versatile lighting fixtures now allows for tailored atmospheric conditions suitable for a range of events, from vibrant student gatherings to the focused ambiance required for art displays.
Simultaneously, the Ignite Gallery's lighting design was conceived to showcase the innovative spirit of OCAD U's students and alumni. The reimagined lighting scheme not only accentuates the artworks but also aligns with the gallery's renewed focus on sustainability and accessibility. By doing so, the firm has not only elevated the aesthetic quality of the exhibitions but has also ensured that the gallery's role as a beacon for emerging artists is visually and ethically illuminated.
The Great Hall investigated the need for flexibility for multiple events and providing a more dynamic approach to the gallery space. Re-positioning the theatrical truss and integrating colour changing lighting provided a new life to the possibilities that this pivotal space has for the university. The central X-shape has a tensile membrane fabric with integrated lighting behind to hide the structural ceiling beyond. The continuous cantilevered perimeter wall washers provide uniform illumination on the lower walls for changing art installations and the remote-controlled theatrical lighting system provides flexibility to facility for multi-show turnover.
The Ignite Gallery space represents the current creative voice of all OCAD University students through exhibition, events and community programs making sure that the lighting design compliments the flexible nature of the gallery space. Multiple scenes and layers of light allow for the gallery to adjust to suit the needs for the artists and their work with perimeter linear fixtures for general lighting and a dedicated track lighting system.
This gallery upgrade lighting project by the firm is more than an enhancement of spaces; it's a redefinition of how light interacts with art, design, and architecture, reinforcing OCAD University's standing as a bastion of creativity and innovation. The project's success is marked by a seamless integration of design and function, honoring both the university's heritage and its forward-thinking ethos.
