General Info

About the Project

Project Description

The lighting design of the Portland Bridges, Cherry Street North Bridge, Cherry Street South Bridge, and Commissioners Street Bridge, enhances Toronto’s waterfront by transforming critical infrastructure into illuminated landmarks. These bridges signify a commitment to purposeful urban design and public engagement that connects neighbourhoods within the city. At night, the lighting design transforms these structures into radiant gateways. A meticulously coordinated system of linear LED luminaires highlights the bridges' sweeping steel arches, emphasizing their graceful geometry while maintaining a sense of cohesion within the family of structures. The lighting scheme follows the bridges' inherent "kit of parts" design philosophy, with subtle but distinct variations that reflect their individual character and purpose.

Designed with the community in mind, the lighting improves safety and accessibility along pedestrian and cycling paths, encouraging active transportation and fostering a stronger connection between the city and its waterfront. Fixtures are carefully integrated to preserve the purity of the bridge structures while ensuring a welcoming and comfortable experience for those passing through.

This project was a collaborative effort, bringing together architects, engineers, and lighting designers to create a seamless integration of form and function. The lighting design respects the architectural intent while introducing a dynamic nighttime identity, reinforcing the bridges as more than just infrastructure, they are public spaces that shape the city’s evolving narrative. Recognized internationally for their innovative engineering and design, the lighting of the Portland Bridges underscores their dual role as functional infrastructure and cultural landmarks. This lighting project establishes a powerful dialogue between form, function, and environment, ensuring the bridges remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
