Toronto Eaton Centre - Galleria Lighting Upgrade

General Info

About the Project

Project Description

Toronto’s Eaton Centre Galleria upgrade demanded a lighting strategy that balanced heritage sensitivity with forward-looking performance. As one of Canada’s most recognizable commercial interiors, the Galleria is defined by its sweeping skylight, generous scale, and strong connection to daylight. The lighting design needed to respect this original architectural intent while responding to a full skylight replacement, phased construction, and the realities of a continuously operating, high-traffic shopping environment.

A new LED lighting approach was developed to significantly enhance energy efficiency while delivering higher, more consistent light levels throughout the Galleria. Legacy light sources were replaced with high-efficacy LED luminaires engineered with high optical control. These optics precisely shape and distribute light, minimizing glare and spill while improving vertical and horizontal illumination. The result is a brighter, more visually comfortable environment that better supports wayfinding, retail visibility, and the overall spatial clarity of the Galleria—without compromising the openness and transparency that define the space.

Energy performance was a core driver of the design. The LED system dramatically reduces connected load and ongoing energy consumption, while extending fixture life and lowering maintenance demands in a challenging, high-ceiling environment. Daylight integration plays a critical role: lighting output is carefully calibrated to complement the renewed skylight, allowing electric light to recede when natural light is abundant and seamlessly support it when conditions change.

Central to the upgrade is a new DMX-based lighting control system that introduces a high level of flexibility and precision. This system enables dynamic control of light levels, zoning, and scenes, allowing the Galleria to respond to time of day, seasonal daylight variation, special events, and future programming needs. The infrastructure is designed for long-term adaptability, ensuring the lighting can evolve alongside the Eaton Centre itself.

Together, these enhancements preserve a beloved Toronto landmark while elevating the daily experience of millions of visitors—reinforcing the Eaton Centre’s role as a vibrant, inclusive, and future-ready urban destination.
