Project Description
Originally constructed in 1988, Canada’s second largest indoor theme park was in need of an update. The renovation of the 86,000 square foot open concept entertainment destination was fit out within a tight 15-month schedule while the shopping Centre remained open.
The steampunk inspired theme is reflected in the venue’s finishes and also in the design of the rides. Large custom pendants suspended from the high ceiling provide an ambient glow to the space, while integrated handrail lighting illuminates just about every walk way, bridge and stair case. Combinations of theatrical LED lighting and traditional architectural sources transform the space while decorative arrangements of exposed lamps and a series of custom luminaires further reinforce the narrative the and the sense of a different place and time.
Through collaboration with the venue operator and architect, the lighting was integrated with the industrial design aesthetic and dreamlike setting. The general, big space light levels are low, while animated, high energy lighting is reserved for the feature areas (rides, skating rink, stage) scattered throughout the amusement space.
Fixture customizations throughout the space add to the overall atmosphere; the 750 foot skating trail (Canada’s largest indoor ice trail) boasts a continuous, dynamically illuminated perimeter.
The spoke-less ferris wheel is a first in North America and the second of its kind in the world.
